Haiti Earthquake- How You Can Help

My heart and prayers go out to the individuals and families who are suffering with the Haiti earthquake tragedy.  I have to be honest that it is difficult to watch the news as it is unimaginable with what they are going through and horrific.

At a time like this, many of us are eager to help those in Haiti and we need to be cautious with the organizations that we donate to.  Unfortunately there are many scammers who are known to take advantage of people’s good intentions to help others.  In the past, there have been illegitimate charities and websites created to look like official organizations, so make sure you donate to charities with which you are familiar with.

Mobile donations are increasing and the 3 listed below have been verified as legitimate.  Make sure that you verify other “text to donate” services that pop up before texting the donation.  Be cautious about giving money to solicited emails and phone calls.   If you believe the phone call is from an organization in which you want to donate, just call the organization’s phone number yourself to donate or mail a check.

Ways To Help:

  • The U.S. Department of State has verified that if you text “HAITI” to “90999″ then $10 will be sent the Red Cross and charged to your cell phone bill.
  • The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund(CBHF) was created by President Bush and President Clinton to raise funds for immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts in Haiti.  Mobile Phone Donations:  Text the word “QUAKE” to 20222 to donate $10 to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, charged to your cell phone bill.
  • Text the word “YELE” to 501501 to contribute $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake fund created by the musician Wyclef Jean.
  • FoxNews.com has listed 35+ trustworthy organizations that you can donate money to on behalf of helping those in Haiti.  This list includes the contact information for the American Red Cross, Samaritan’s Purse, Salvation Army and many more.
  • Many local organizations and churches are collecting food, water, medical supplies and other items like soap, buckets, shovels, and washcloths.

I know that some organizations would rather you give money, but for some in this economy, cash is hard to come by.  However, you can always donate used clothes or other supplies that they might be in need of.   The rebuilding of Haiti is going to be a long process, so they will be able to use your donations at some point.
