Make a Special Christmas Stocking for your Child

stockingsMy family doesn’t have formal Christmas stockings for each person yet, especially since we don’t have a fireplace or stocking hanger.  I have always loved the stockings from Pottery Barn Kids, but I was waiting until all the children were born so they could match and be monogrammed. (I know, I kind of weird like that).

For the past few years, I have been using these great big stockings (40 inches tall) that came from the Dollar Tree since I can put bigger stocking-stuffers inside and it really makes it easy to organize the gifts.  The stockings are plain, but I recently came across an idea to jazz them up.

A while back I read about a lady who made her child’s Christmas stocking grow with them through the years.  Every December, she would sew or glue something on the stocking that represented something he or she learned or accomplished that year.  Sometimes she used patches, charms, buttons, or scrap-booking embellishments.

So if her child learned to tie their shoe, ride a bike, swim, or learn to read, then they would add a charm for those milestones.  As the child grew, he or she would help decide what would be the best charm or addition to their stocking.

I think it’s neat to reflect on the accomplishments and milestones that our children complete each year and as they grow they can decide which one they are the most proud of. I would need my husband’s help in deciding for my own children this year (ages 2 & 3), since they have grown so much and it seems like everything is an accomplishment.

It really wouldn’t hurt for us adults to do the same.  Maybe mine this year might be a symbol of starting this blog, becoming more fit, or learning how to make really good pancake shapes.  :)

What would you put as your accomplishment?
