Stop Thumb Sucking with an Aloe Plant?

Okay, now that my son just turned 3, I am acquiring the courage to tackle the thumb sucking issue.  If there was a definite solution, I probably would have started earlier, but I knew it would probably be one of those things that required different techniques and lots of tears.

Apart of me is sad to end his thumb sucking, because he reminds me of my little baby boy when I see him do it.  However, I want to put an end to it so that his teeth won’t be too damaged, he will be healthier by not ingesting all germs he comes in contact with, and I know it will be harder to stop as he gets older.

My doctor mentioned yesterday that I should try the gel from an Aloe Plant because of the bitter taste.  I thought, how perfect because I already own an Aloe Plant.  Well, I tasted it myself and it was disgusting.  I put it on my son’s thumb and of course he didn’t’ like the feeling of it.  I thought he would make a response when he put his thumb back in his mouth, but his only response was sucking!

So, I think I have to find something even nastier to put on his thumb since 3 applications of the aloe didn’t help.  I was really hoping it would work since it is nontoxic and safe to ingest in small quantities.

Oh well, I will be on the look out for another product and keep you posted as I find a solution for my son.  Thumbs up to you if you succeeded in this same task!
