Be informed of Crime Reported in your Area

Most police departments are trying to make citizens aware of police reports and crime that occurs in your area through the internet. There are a few websites that show this information and it depends on your local police department as to whether or not they update this information.

Some people are against having this information public, because if they live in an area where a lot of crime occurs, they don’t want the value of their property decreasing and be hard to resell.  Others are for these types of sites so that they can be informed and be more aware of what goes on around them.

By simply typing in your address, the Websites can give you detailed information about when and where crime happens.  The websites give you information from the last month, but you can set the calendar to give you more than a months worth of data.  It also has information on sexual offenders, and one website showed pictures of the sexual offenders.  You can sign up for email alerts so that you can always be informed.

If your local area isn’t using one of these websites, you can submit a request that they participate and hopefully most of them will eventually provide the public with this information.

My in-laws house was broken into the other week and their television and laptops were stolen, and they live in a small, gated community.  Maybe if they would have been informed of crime in their area, they might would have been diligent to always set the alarm when leaving and the thieves would had been caught or deterred.

Again– not all areas use these websites, so check with your local police department so that when it shows zero crimes for your area, it really is zero crimes.
