Goats on a Roof?
My aunt visited Wisconsin for the first time and sent my kids a postcard with goats on the roof! Apparently Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant is quite an attraction, as well as a family owned restaurant in Door County. The restaurant is known for the delicious and authentic Swedish and Norwegian foods, but even more for the goats.
So, what’s the story with the goats?
In 1973 the restaurant was renovated with log buildings that were assembled in Norway. A special underlayer was put on the roof and seeded with grass. The grass on the roof was a Scandinavian style that began when the farmers would build their homes into the side of the hill so the goats and animals could graze on the roof! I still don’t understand why farmers would want animals to graze on the roof unless they had a lack of real estate. I couldn’t find the answer, so please inform me if you know.
Just in case you were wondering, their website stated that their is a ramp on the back of the restaurant for the goats to climb up and down and the goats have never fallen off. Also, the grass on the roof has to be cut with a lawnmower just like any other grass.
So, if you ever travel through Sister Bay, Wisconsin, you might want to keep Al Johnson’s Swedish Retaurant in mind…and please no feeding the goats.
