Decorating Cakes, Cupcakes, and Cookies with Unique Edible Images

I saw a brief clipping on The Early Show the other morning and they were talking about printing images on edible paper for decorating cakes, cupcakes, and cookies.  I decided to do a little research on this topic since I found it intriguing.

Certain models of Canon and Epson printers have edible ink cartridges available.  You can purchase edible icing sheets that you feed into your printer to print images to decorate cupcakes, cakes, and cookies.  The frosting sheets have a shelf life of 1 year, so if  you buy a pack of 20, you can save them for future use.  The cupcake and cookie sheets have circles on the paper so that you can just punch out the circles to be applied to the cookies and cupcakes after printing.

Kopykake and Tasty FotoArt both sell edible ink and edible paper.

If you are into this sort of thing, you can buy one of these models of printers (starting around $50) and then purchase the edible ink for about ($20-$30).  You can also purchase special edible ink printers for this purpose if you are a baker.  If you are going to use your current printer, you need to clean it thoroughly and maybe even buy a new print head that is specifically for edible ink.  You really need to designate one printer for the edible printing, and not go back and forth between edible ink and non-edible ink.

When I first heard of the edible paper my mind went racing of the possibilities.  You could put pictures of the kids throughout the year on their birthday cupcakes, a family picture on a cake for a family reunion, corporate logos on cookies, and lots of other unique ideas.  However, I don’t want to designate a printer for this purpose since I don’t have much time for baking.

I called Publix grocery store and they will put an image on a cake for an additional $7, so you might want to see if your local bakery can do this. They can also do cookies and cupcakes, but he said that they charge individually and it gets more expensive.  Gogo Cake and D and G Occasions will also print out images and send them to you on edible paper for you to apply to your cakes or cookies.

If you don’t want to go to the trouble of the printer like myself, you can also purchase the icing sheets and use the edible ink pens to write messages and phrases on the paper and then put them on the cupcakes.  The pens seem easier to me than using an icing gel.

I love this! I’m going to look into all of this. I probably won’t buy the printer, but might consider ordering the images. :)
If I baked more I would probably buy the printer

I think it’s really cool too! I agree about the printer, unless I end up baking more. :)
