10 Steps to Creating the Ultimate Facebook Fan Page for Your Blog or Business
I started ChattyGal.com a few months ago and I am just getting around to creating my Facebook Fan Page. Below are the steps that I have followed and some useful tutorials that I used and think will be helpful to you.

Chatty Gal's Fan Page
1. Create Fan Page Creating a Fan Page isn’t very hard at all, but it did take me a few moments to realize how to find the page once I created it. There are icons in the bottom left of your screen once you login to your Facebook Page and you click on the one that says “Ads and Pages.” Checkout Simple Steps to Create a Fan Page
2. Create a Sign up for your Newsletter, Free eBook, Etc. on your Fan Page- You can use FBML (Facebook Markup Language) to create a landing page for your first time visitors giving them an option to signup for newsletters, request a free eBook, etc. I created a landing page for visitors to signup for my blog updates and to download my free eBook. Good information on how to do this can be found at ReturnonSubscriber.com and JohnChow.com.
If you want to design your own landing page or form, She’s So Crafty Goods has a good tutorial using Photoshop. I made mine using Fireworks and exported the images and html.
I used Dreamweaver to make sure the design and images were what I wanted, and then I copied the html code into the FBML box and it worked easily. If copying from Dreamweaver, be sure to only copy what’s between the body tags, but not the body tags.

3. Customize Sidebar – You can use FBML to add more items to your sidebar, such as twitter information and anything else that would be useful to your readers. Nate Cheeley has a video tutorial that shows how to add information to the side bar, which he added a “Featured Training” box. I used this same method to include my Twitter info.
4. Optimize for SEO – Use Extended Info to add more information and categories to your Info page so that you can target keywords for your blog. I really liked the post written by She’s So Crafty Goods about this topic.
5. Import RSS Reader – Jean O’Brien has simple steps to do this.
6. Twitter – Use the Twitter Exporter to post Facebook status updates to your twitter account.
7. Facebook Fan box Button – Add a Facebook fan box to your blog so that readers can become a fan and join in the conversation. Video Tutorial
8. Invite Fans- You can send an invitation to your Facebook friends to join your Fan Page.
9. Unique URL – After you have 25 fans, you can get a unique URL for your Fan Page. Facebook used to require 1000 fans, then 100, and now it is 25. (At the time of writing this post, I don’t have 25 fans so I can’t complete this step. Please help me reach this goal!)
Update: Thanks to my readers, I now have more than 25 fans so my Vanity URL is
http://www.facebook.com/ChattyGalBlog
10. Promote your Fan Page – You can twitter about your Fan Page, include it in your signature on community sites and email, and promote with the use of ads with Facebook advertising.
I hope this post will help you create the ultimate Facebook fan page. If you found this information helpful, please become a fan of the ChattyGaBlog!

“Imma let you finish. But you currently have 91 fans on your Facebook page. Why haven’t you gotten the vanity url yet?” Check out mine at http://facebook.com/loneplacebo

Tony,
Thanks for the comment. I actually did get the vanity url once I reached 25 fans. When I wrote the post, I only had a few fans, but thankfully I have acquired more.
The new url is http://www.facebook.com/ChattyGalBlog
BTW…nice blog.

@ChattyGalBlog hey there, I loved your tutorial on designing fan pages. The only problem that it doesn’t include how to add links to the images. I exported my images & html from photoshop to Dreamweaver. I copied the html (all content between body tags) to the fbml but I only get the images and the links are gone… what to do there?
January 18, 2010 @ 2:53 PM
Kareem,
Nice job on the Facebook landing page. I really like it.
I actually haven’t used any click-able images, so I didn’t realize that there was a problem with trying to do that.
I tried clicking on your images, (twitter and myspace) and the images are click-able, but they are adding the url to the domain name after your facebook page.
Lorraine Siew has a post here in which it shows in the example #2 the code she used for putting a link to an image (it looks just like html to me). I would post the code, but I can’t seem to get to display correctly here.
Try this and let me know how it works.

Thank you so much ChattyGal! I too noticed the link mishaps and those will be easy fixes. I will take a closer look at the link you posted, as there looks to be a lot of reading. I’m in a teaching credential program and so I’m currently doing some ‘real important’ reading now but I will definitely check out the link later on. I’ll keep you posted on how things turn out – thanks again.

Dreamweaver has been for a while my personal goto software for years. I truly do not know what I would undoubtedly do without having it. There were occasions when I initially started using the application, and I believed it was way too complex. Now I fly around it, and it has turn out to be a great asset in my tool box. Anyway thank you for the write-up.

Hello! Just thought I’d respond. I honestly was impressed by your post. Keep up the phenomonal effort.
