Twitter Basics 101 – Part 3

This is part 3 for Twitter 101 and the Basics. If you missed the first article on Twitter Basics or Part 2, you might want to read these before continuing.

If you have started using twitter or about to begin, you will notice that there are different symbols used by others.

Twitter Vocabulary and symbols:

  • Hashtag (#) A hashtag is the pound symbol written before a tag.  Hashtags are used to group tweets and assign them to a category. If you have a public account, others can search by a specific hashtag and view your tweets if you used that same #hashtag.  I have only used hashtags at conferences so that I can view what others at the conference are tweeting and they can view mine.
  • ReTweet” (RT) You can “ReTweet” something written by another person by selecting the ReTweet button.  ReTweeted messages start with an RT at the beginning followed by the original comment.  ReTweet is used when you want to share information to your followers that someone else wrote. ReTweeting is great for sharing articles, motivational quotes, or new events and sales.

  • Reply” (@username) You can Reply” to another person’s comment by selecting the reply button.  A Reply is when you want to respond to someone’s comment and this message will be public.  A reply tweet starts with @username and then followed by the message.

  • “Direct Message” (D) You can send a Direct Message to someone so that it will be kept private.  A direct message is noted by a D at the beginning of the tweet, followed by the the other person’s username and then the message.  Below you will see an example of a direct message before it is submitted and then you will see an example of what a direct message that I receive looks like.
