What is RSS?
RSS stands for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication. It is a technology for delivering a list of updated headlines, notices, and content for sites that you are interested in without having to visit each site. Some people describe and RSS as a news feed, even though the feeds aren’t necessarily typical “news” information. In a nutshell, all of the websites you love will be delivered to you on your homepage.
RSS saves you time by not having to visit individual sites that you are interested in and allows you to stay informed of the latest content. In other words, all of the sites that you love and surf can be delivered to you when the content and information is updated saving you time from checking them all.
Repeatedly checking each website from your bookmarks to see if there is any new content can be very tedious. So, instead of going to different sites to check out the latest news, weather, quick recipes, gossip, and coupons, you can just have it delivered to you in one window. You just subscribe through RSS to get fed the information to your reader and all of the information is combined in one screen. How cool is that?!
How do I get started with RSS?
In order to receive these RSS Feeds, you have to have an RSS Reader.
There are many types of RSS Readers available but some popular and free web-based feed readers are Google Reader, My Yahoo, and Bloglines. You can start with one of these by subscribing and see how you like it.
What if I don’t want to use an RSS Reader? Subscribe by Email
It’s okay if you feel the RSS Feed is too complicated or confusing. You can still receive updated information by subscribing by providing your email address and then the new information will be sent to your inbox!
I hope this explanation answered some of your questions about what RSS subscription is.
